Tanya Bowden

<< Bachelor of Science (Exercise Science) University of Wollongong
<< Master of Physiotherapy (University of Sydney)
<< Post-Graduate Training in Muscle Energy Techniques
<< Post-Graduate Training in Running Biomechanics
<< Co-Ordinator of Clinical Education

Tanya’s keen interest in exercise and wonder of the human body led her down the coast of NSW towards Wollongong University where she studied and completed her Exercise Science degree. At this point, she decided that she wanted to further her knowledge and learn some hands-on techniques and so commenced study of Physiotherapy. In 2003, she graduated from Sydney University and commenced working across a range of both public and private sector environments as well as working abroad in London for 4 years. Tanya has specialised across several areas including rehab, hydrotherapy, sports, orthopaedic, aged care and disability services as well as working within the corporate Physiotherapy environment.

Being a runner herself, Tanya has developed a special interest in running injuries and pays particular attention to biomechanical analysis of running and the assessment of factors that may contribute towards injury. She prides herself on being able to develop and tailor a program with specifically targeted functional exercises to both aid recovery from injury, and enhance overall performance. Tanya finds the use of dry needling to be very effective in treating muscle pain and releasing over active muscles. She believes that in most cases, carefully applied manual techniques, appropriate exercises prescription and lifestyle advice can triumph over pain and functional limitation and result in better health for her clients.

Tanya also appreciates the importance of good health at work and has substantial experience in ergonomics, workplace assessment and onsite Physiotherapy for workplaces. She believes that a comprehensive treatment plan should take into account the work environment and is always happy to offer advice in this area.

She has been appointed to the position of Co-Ordinator of Clinical Education at Sydney Sports & Orthopaedic Physiotherapy. This role involves liaising with international physiotherapy doctorate students (predominately from universities in the US), final year students from University of Sydney and Adelaide University, and arranging short internships for them at SSOP. These Interns not only spend time observing various SSOP physiotherapists at work, but also deepen their understanding of physiotherapeutic principles by observing some of Sydney’s top orthopaedic surgeons.
